Being blessed, I want to do what I can to serve the vulnerable in our community and to give them a better life, particularly those not adequately supported by other social safety nets. I first started doing charity work in the 1980s with other organisations.

I was invited to be a committee member of Singapore Red Cross Lucky Draw in early 1990s since then I have not stopped volunteering for Red Cross. I was a Committee member of the International Red Cross Fund Raising in London from 2003-2007. After this, I started chairing the organising committee for Singapore Red Cross Benefit Gala in 2008, 2011 and 2014. I also chaired International Bazaar 2009 and 2012, and Fashion for Humanity 2013.

I have been volunteering with the Singapore Red Cross and Red Crescent because the Seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Movement resonates very strongly with me. I can identify with the cause of serving humanity with impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.

My most unforgettable volunteering moments were those when I have approached a sponsor or volunteer performer and they were so willing to support the good work that Singapore Red Cross has been doing. When I set a goal, I aim higher than my goal. There may be challenges along the way and I have had to be firm with our decisions and I am glad that my committee members agree with my leadership to push forward and reach beyond the target.

I was conferred an award by the Singapore Tatler in celebration of Community Services, and Leadership Award for Community Services, both in 2011. In 2013, I was conferred the Singapore Red Cross Commendation Award.

I am committed to the tasks I take on, and will work hard to achieve what I have promised to deliver. I do my best to keep to my appointments on time and will not cancel it even if I have better offers. I also expect my committee members to have the same sense of commitment.

I would advise people keen on volunteering with the Singapore Red Cross to believe in the cause they are supporting, then they can work hard to achieve it.
